THE much-anticipated battle for second place in River Murray A grade netball was tightly contested with Imperials taking honours by nine goals against the more favoured Mannum side.
Imperials started confidently scoring the first goal of the match.
Mannum’s goal shooter Katrina Reschke struggled to find her range early and Imperials’ Dallas Huxtable provided pivotal turnovers to give her team the early break.
Mannum was able to capitalise on some wild throws through Imperials’ centre court to produce a run of goals to gain a three-goal buffer at the end of the first quarter.
Imperials started the second quarter with Carrie Daniels stepping up and creating space with direct passes into her goalers Olivia Scholz and Jenna Daniels.
Huxtable was tight in defence, reducing the impact of Amy Loechel in Mannum’s goal circle, leaving Reschke to gather the rebounds.
At half time Imperials led 26 to 24. Mannum made changes at the start of the third quarter with Deanna Smith coming on.
Mannum was able to create space with Viv Rosenzweig at wing defence and Tracy Loechel at goal defence moving well through the centre.
Imps’ goal keeper Sharon Taylor picked up some timely intercepts to enable Imperials to gain some quick goals with Scholz converting her opportunities.
Both teams matched up in what was a highly physical quarter.
Imperials went into the final quarter with a four-goal buffer.
Both teams had early turnovers due to loose passes.
Scholz for Imperials increased her workload and was rewarded with accurate shooting.
Mannum’s Kimberly McQueen continued to battle hard in her entertaining tussle with Penny Fielke, but Mannum was unable to peg back a determined Imperials team with Imperials winning 51 to 42.

A reserves
Mannum won the toss but the pass was quickly intercepted and the first goal was scored by Imperials.
Tight defence in the goal circle from Imperials’ defenders Haley Cahalan and Kylie Burns helped secure a six-goal lead by the end of the first quarter.
After the first change Mannum came out firing with their goal defence Kelly Klose cutting off her Imperials opponents’ drive and also rebounding well.
Coupled with strong back-up from her team-mate Renae Wakefield at wing defence, they moved the ball confidently down the court, gaining much needed ground.
Imps continued to work hard and held onto their lead by one at the half time break.
Strong contests for every pass saw each player on the court work tirelessly as the teams battled for control.
Despite the long reach of Mannum goal keeper Kathy Egmanis, accurate shooting from Imperials’ Heidi Rangai allowed Imps to regain their lead by five.
The intensity of the last quarter forced many errors from both sides.
Aggressive play saw much more movement of the ball up and down the court with limited conversion from all goalers.
Mannum managed more goals than Imperials, but Imps’ lead at three quarter time enabled them to run it out and win by one.

B grade
Mannum started with six unanswered goals, with some high balls being lobbed into their goalers.
Mannum goal attack Heather Rosenzweig shot with extreme accuracy after being fed some lightning passes from her attackers.
Imps were rattled and found it hard to score.
Mannum held a seven-goal lead at the first break. Imperials settled in the second term with some steady play from their team, and some strong defence from goal keeper Rachel Mobbs and goal defence Holly Frazer.
Imperials came back and took the lead at the long break by four goals.
Imperials turned the tide in the second half with some excellent feeding from their mid court players.
Mannum made too many mistakes in their attacking line but never gave in.
The Imperials goalers capitalised on these mistakes and in a very physical tussle were able to take control of the match and run out winners 49, 29.

C grade
Both Imperials and Mannum were undefeated coming into this match and the first few minutes reflected this with neither team able to make a breakthrough.
Mannum, however, with strong positioning by their goalers, Sarah Wandel and Sam Denver, were able to score the first goal, but it was Imperials who led at the first break 15-9.
The second quarter was again evenly contested with the Imperials mid court of Leah Frazer and Sally McLaren feeding well to their goalers.
At the main break the difference remained the same with Imperials still leading by six, 27-21.
In the third quarter the Mannum defenders, Tahlia Cornelius and Sue Robinson, put pressure on the Imperials goalers, Rochelle Schenscher and Chloe Lipp, forcing them to be less accurate.
These turnovers were converted with accurate shooting from Mannum goalers Wandel and Denver but Mannum could make no headway with Imperials leading 38-32 going into the final break.
In the last quarter Imperials stepped up a gear with their defenders, especially Amanda Traeger, working hard to take many valuable intercepts for her side.
Imperials were able to increase their lead in the last quarter to ten goals and hang on for a tough win from a very strong Mannum team.
Final scores were Imperials 52, Mannum 42.

17 and under
Imperials took control in the first quarter with tight defence throughout the court, which caused many turnovers.
Alannah Vanzo at centre for Imperials worked tirelessly, taking many interceptions for her team, while Shavaun Monjean was leading well and feeding the ball into her goalers.
Zoe Gepp and Brianna Schenscher for Imperials combined beautifully in the goal circle, converting their shots well.
Imperials led 15-9 at quarter time.
The game continued much the same in the second quarter, but Mannum was finding it difficult to convert in the goal ring with Imperials increasing their lead at half time.
In the third quarter Mannum stepped up a notch, but was still finding it hard to make their shots.
Although their shooters had plenty of opportunities, the tight defence of Jade Lewis and Alyce Clarke put them under a lot of pressure.
At the final break Imperials led 47-26.
In the last quarter Imperials became a little untidy.
Mannum’s goal defence Jennipher Vivian continued to work tirelessly for her team, creating drive and talk down the court.
There was a good contest between the two centres, Alyce Clarke and Anastasia Kendall, throughout the last term, but Imperials ran out victors with the final score 66-34.

15 and under division one
Mannum scored first after taking a few minutes to settle, with their goalers passing and positioning themselves to advantage in the goal circle.
Imperials took a little longer to relax, with inaccurate passing causing turnovers, which Mannum were unable to capitalise on fully.
Libby Frazer, for Imps, and Jenna Woolard, for Mannum, were having a tight battle in the centre court.
The scores were tied at eight-all at the end of the quarter.
Mannum gained an early lead in the second quarter with defenders Shannan Rosenzweig, Emma Schleuter and Annabel Rudiger creating opportunities from loose balls.
Imperials defenders Meaghan Watkins and Lexi Blight applied lots of pressure to their opponents in the goal circle by rebounding and blocking well.
Mannum led by two goals at half time.
In the third quarter Brianna Burt came into centre for Imperials, immediately creating more drive and momentum down the court.
Play was even overall, however Mannum capitalised on some stray passes by Imperials to lead 31 to 25 at the last break.
Mannum raced ahead in the last quarter, with Rosenzweig for Mannum making pivotal interceptions in defence and providing great drive down the court.
Mannum shooters Bianca Schache and Lucinda Kendall made the most of every opportunity presented by their team-mates with great accuracy in the goal circle.
However, the Imps defenders impressed with their persistence and spirit to try and stem the flow of goals. Mannum were the victors 46-28.

15 and under division two
Mannum scored the first goal of the game but the Imperials defenders proved too strong, resulting in many turnovers with Imps leading at the first break by three goals.
Strong defence from both teams in the second quarter made scoring difficult.
Samantha Leahy for Imperials was feeding the ball well into the goal ring with Erin Lindsay leading and shooting well.
Ruby Adams at centre and Lauren Wiblin at wing attack for Mannum drove well down the court, but Imperials defenders Kaitelyn Freeman and Michelle Martin made it difficult for Mannum to score.
Imperials were making the most of their turnovers converting to an eight-goal lead at half time.
Both teams made several changes at the break with Mannum settling quicker scoring early goals, with the score at three quarter time back to a five-goal lead to Imperials.
Imperials made changes again in the last break and Mannum made the most of Imperials being unsettled.
Mannum’s strong defence forced Imperials to make a lot of passing errors with Mannum levelling the score during the quarter, but Imperials settled and were the winners at the end by two goals, 22 to 20.

13 and under division two
The game between Mannum and Imperials started evenly with a lot of pressure applied by both teams.
Mannum’s goalers Sophie Kroehn and Kaitlyn Lowe worked hard in the circle to score the first goal of the game.
Imperials’ centre court players Danielle Monjean, Rhiannon Jones and Jasmine Story provided Imperials with great drive down the court.
Scores at quarter time were Imperials five to Mannum three.
Imperials came out fighting in the second quarter with their goalers Chantelle Monjean and Kayla McDiarmid shooting some wonderful goals.
Mannum defenders Alana Schache and Rebecca Van Eldik applied pressure, but Imperials increased their lead by 12 goals at half time.
The third quarter saw many turnovers by both teams.
Imperials’ defenders Jasmine Hutchings and Abby McIntosh fought hard in the ring to stop Mannum’s flow.
Tara Yeates and Caitlin Christians provided some good passes to their goalers.
Tanesha Ytsma made many interceptions, turning the ball over for Imperials.
At the third quarter the score was Imperials 22 to Mannum 9.
The final quarter saw many hard-fought contests throughout the court with both teams evenly matched.
Imperials ran out winners on the day 28 to Mannum 14.

11 and under
It was a very entertaining first quarter with the ball constantly rebounding from defence to forward for both teams.
Centre Sasha Patard and wing attack Rani Smith combined well for Imperials, who went in to the first break with a 3-2 lead.
Mannum was very dominant in the second quarter with their centre Kayla Robertson helping to provide many opportunities for goal scoring machine Kelsey Chadwick who, on the occasions when she missed, managed to keep rebounding until the ball fell through the net.
The half time score was Mannum 11 to Imperials 5.
The tide turned again in the third quarter with Imperials running hard and linking together many quick long passes.
Their free-flowing style got them back in the game and they trailed by just one goal at the final break with the score 10-11.
Imperials continued to work hard and kept the momentum going into the last term.
Some good shooting from Caitlin Hattam and Serena Lienert saw Imperials over-run Mannum to claim their first win for the season 16 to 13.

Minis
The first quarter started with Mannum’s Zara Male at centre and Emmeline Vivian at wing attack leading well into space to get the ball to their goalers Elizabeth Griggs and Rachel Gassner, who shot three lovely goals for the quarter.
Imperials’ defenders Georgia Sibley and Abby Vivian worked hard and had beautiful hands over the ball.
Imps had warmed up by the second quarter and great dodging by Caitlin O’Brien helped Madison Fielke shoot Imperials’ first goal to the excitement of her team-mates.
Molly Adler was helping create space, while Mannum’s defenders Nikayla Clark and Ayla Craig were getting their hands to the ball.
Imps revamped their line-up at half time, and with some hard work leading into space by Sarah Crane at wing attack and Emily DeMichele at centre, Imperials’ Rianna Demichele shot a beautiful long shot to score another goal for her team.
Rachel Gassner, in centre for Mannum, was running really well, while Sophie Stagg at goal defence took some lovely intercepts.
Scores at three quarter time were Mannum four to Imps two.
Mannum made a few changes going into the last quarter, with Alesha Neville working hard to get the ball to her goalers over Imperials’ wing defence Sarah Austin, who was reading the ball well.
Mannum’s goalers shot two more goals in what was a very even quarter, with all girls leading into space and working hard to come in front.
A great game was played by all with final scores Mannum 6, Imps 2.

Tigers’ walk in the park
MYPOLONGA travelled to Tailem Bend on a very warm Saturday and the A Grade game of River Murray netball turned out to be a one-sided affair on the scoreboard.
Mypo’s awareness and excellent passing saw them take an early lead by 14 at quarter time.
Tailem made a change at quarter time, bringing 14-year-old Emily Edwards into wing attack and this immediately improved the attacking play for the young Tailem team.
Tailem’s mid court and defence were working hard, but Mypo’s Cassie Martin and Cass Rathjen in goals were very slick and accurate.
Mypo did not have it all their own way in the mid court, with great play between Courtney Blacker and Athalie McArdle in centre.
The Tailem girls to their credit did not give up but were outclassed by a team that could be playing in another higher competition.
Final scores were Mypo 84 to Tailem Bend 28.

A reserves
The game started at a fast rate and at quarter time Tailem was down by six.
Tanya Clothier was a stand-out for Mypo early, with great support from team-mate Gretchen Schubert.
At half time Tailem was down by seven and the game was fairly even.
Mypo’s defence worked tirelessly while Tailem goaler Justine Tomkinson continued to shoot well.
Charise Bristow, for Tailem, worked well in the mid-court, taking numerous interceptions and playing her best game for the season.
The final score was Mypo 54 to Tailem Bend 39.

B grade
The B grade match between Tailem and Mypo started evenly. Karen Smelt and Lauren Mueller, in goals for Mypo, were giving Tailem’s Kayla Little and Cassie Kozikowski a tough time, with the Mypo goalers coming out on top.
Tailem’s Vicki Mayfield and Tina Penhall combined well in goals, with good feeding in by Amanda Hill and Amy Hand.
Kate Frahn and Sam Allen, for Mypo, had solid games in the mid court but it was not just all Mypo, as Amy Hand, Amanda Hill and Hannah Lucas all worked well, never conceding.
This was a good standard of game played in excellent conditions, with Mypo winning 57 to 36.

C grade
The C grade game started slowly.
At quarter time scores were 12 to 5, with Sarah Richmond and Mel Hill playing well for Tailem.
Mypo had some great intercepts, with Tamara Fiegert and Amity Garland having a lot of the ball for Mypo.
At half time the score was Tailem 20 to Mypo 18 and the intensity was increasing.
The game was see-sawing and Tailem started to make the most of their opportunities, being up by five at three quarter time.
Mypo made some forced errors in the last quarter and some great defensive work by Jade Capes and Sarah Richmond for Tailem saw the girls get over the line with a four goal win, 39 to 35.

17 and under
Tailem came out firing, scoring some great goals and applying pressure on the Mypo team.
Jade Capes and Ashlee Clapp, in defence for Tailem, were making their opposition goalers work hard and the game looked good for Tailem.
Toward the end of the first quarter, Mypo started to make some great moves through the mid court area and started to look settled, improving the feeding to their goalers.
Mypo continued to grow in confidence and looked a completely different side in the second quarter, with tall defenders Zoe Dabinett and Anna Wilson making life very difficult for Tailem’s goalers Teegan Edw-ards and Mel Edwards.
Mypo wing attack Sophie Hill was a stand-out for her team, dominating her position and making some impressive drives to the goal circle to feed into her goalers.
Elise Altmann in goals for Mypo continued to step up and was shooting extremely well.
Tailem’s centre Emily Edwards was a stand-out for Tailem, attacking and defending every ball and never giving in.
She had good support from Paige Gower (WD) who never stopped chasing.
Bonnie Piggott played her best game for the season, at wing attack, feeding and driving well for Tailem.
Mypo was too strong in the end and with such tall defenders and accurate shooters they will be the benchmark in the 17 and under competition this year.
A big congratulations to Tailem’s defender/centre court player Ashlee Clapp on playing 100 games on Saturday.
Final scores were Mypo 45, Tailem Bend 26.

15 and under
Mypo and Tailem both come out strongly in the 15 and under match on Saturday.
Some great shooting from Emily Frahn, for Mypo, gave her girls an early lead.
Tailem had some terrific passages of play through the centre court and tried hard all day.
A very physical game was played and in the end Mypo was too strong, running away with a 21 goal win, 54 to 33.

13 and under division one
This game started as expected with Mypo dominating the first quarter to lead 22 to 1.
The Tailem girls were trying really hard but at the moment are unfortunately lacking depth for this division.
Mypo made some changes at half time and Tailem come out with great persistence and great attitude and tried hard, putting some of their court plays into practise.
Final scores were Mypo 62 to Tailem Bend 8.

11 and under
The game started close with each team scoring goal for goal in the first quarter.
Sarah Shepherd and Ashlee Zadow, for Tailem, combined to make a successful team and Amy Richardson and Emma Bratkovic, for Mypo, were very accurate in goals.
The second quarter saw Tailem shoot ahead, led by Bridey Merrett.
Tailem’s goalers were closely defended by Mikaela Jericho and Tayla Kempe.
Alex Appelbee for Tailem fought hard through the centre court.
The final quarter saw Mypo shoot magnificently and they outscored Tailem in this quarter but in the end Tailem were the victors by 12 goals, 26 to 14.

Minis
Tailem’s Molly Maddaford started strongly in the centre, turning over many balls for her team.
Madeline Williams and Bethany Clapp were great in defence for Tailem, having a good tussle with Mypo’s Hannah Elliot and Lexi O’Loughlin.
Sarah Drendel and Georgia Duell moved well in the third quarter for Tailem, finding space in the goal circle.
The last quarter saw Taylah Edwards in centre provide Tailem with drive up and down the court and together with Kirsty Piggott and Bethany Clapp in goals, Tailem was able to convert all of their hard work into two great goals.
A great game was played by both teams, with scores tied at two-all.

Jervois finish strongly against Meningie
JERVOIS and Meningie began their River Murray Netball Association A grade match defending, attacking and shooting well, as both sides evenly contested the ball.
Meningie goal keeper Bethany Marsson took the first intercept, however her team was unable to score and the game remained even.
The intensity continued throughout the first quarter with Jervois edging ahead by two goals to lead 15-13 at the first break.
Jervois’ Tracey Kennett in wing attack and Kelly Maczkowiack in centre attacked the ball.
Meningie goal defender Lauren Thorpe and Jervois’ Sally Llewellyn had a good tussle all match.
The Jervois defence of Caitlin Liebich in keeper and Julia Llewellyn in defence was intense, forcing Meningie goalers Tracey Mitchell and Jane Swan to work hard, however they continued to shoot accurately keeping their team within two goals at half time.
Meningie began the third quarter with a couple of great turnovers to close the two-goal lead.
Jervois then settled and took the upper hand, controlling the game to lead by 11 goals at the third break, 48-37.
In the last quarter Meningie’s Josie Saddlier at wing attack worked hard, passing accurately into the goalers.
However, Jervois’ great team play created a lot of opportunities and they eventually ran out winners by 20 goals, 69-49.

A reserves
The game was evenly contested and continued to go goal for goal.
Meningie goalers Megan Smart and Lozzy Thorpe were accurate and made Jervois’ defenders Alisha Nagel and Hailey Morris work hard.
Jervois made silly errors, on which Meningie capitalised.
At the end of the first quarter Meningie was up by five goals.
Meningie came out hard and fast in the second quarter, causing havoc in the Jervois goal circle.
Nagel and Morris for Jervois increased their work rate, making Meningie work hard for the ball.
Jervois goalers Kristyn Morris and Carlie Mason began to settle and gain confidence in their shooting.
The intensity of both teams increased and Jervois finished the quarter off the stronger. At half-time Meningie led 26-24.
Jervois came out hard in the third quarter with Cassie Brion coming on at wing attack, giving voice and height around the ring.
At the third break Meningie increased their lead to 38-35.
In the final quarter there were many turnovers, however, Jervois was unable to capitalise.
Jervois’ Nicky Smith in centre and Crystal Crivellaro in wing defence tried hard all game, as did Meningie’s Chelsea Gibbs in centre.
Jervois continued to give it their all, however the Meningie goalers worked brilliantly and led their team to a seven-goal win, 50-43.

B grade
Both teams started well with Jervois gaining the first break, however, Meningie then narrowed the lead with accurate shooting.
Meningie were able to capitalise on turnovers created by their circle defenders after they forced Jervois to make errors, which gave them the edge at the first break, 14-8.
In the second quarter Jervois goalers Jo Fleet and Lyndal Densley worked effectively to close the gap.
Both keepers were contesting the ball strongly, which resulted in many timely intercepts.
During the third quarter Jervois defender Coralie Batchelor, in her 100th game, and Sally Mighell in keeper defended well, making their opponents work hard.
Meningie’s centre court players created space and drive down the court making their movement from defence to attack very quick, giving them the lead at the third break 35-30.
Jervois changed their attack in the final quarter, which opened up the mid court and goal circle, and allowed them to capitalise on errors.
Eventually Jervois were able to fight back and come out winners.

C grade
There was some great shooting from Jervois goalers Kristen Love and Kimberley Overall in the first quarter, with the Meningie goalers responding, as the game went goal-for-goal.
Jervois slowly pulled away, with help from the tight defence of Sarah Bailey at goal defence.
Bailey’s efforts proved to be successful as the Jervois goalers were able convert more opportunities, taking the lead in the first break by six goals.
During the second quarter Jervois continued to surge forward, with great team play down the court.
Meningie’s Lia Amber, in goal defence, worked hard to keep her team in the game, however, Jervois increased their lead to be up by 19 at half-time.
Both teams made changes going into the third quarter, which resulted in a much more even game.
Jervois was able to maintain itslead to be up by 21 going into the last quarter.
Meningie came out strong in the final term with accurate shooting by Dana Wilson, but great movement in Jervois’ goal circle by Overall kept Jervois in the lead.
Meningie continued to work hard to turn over balls and convert at every opportunity, eventually outscoring Jervois by two goals in the final quarter to go down 36, 56.

17 and under
This game began in a good tussle, with Jervois kicking off with the first two goals.
Both teams created many turnovers and continued to fight and give it their all. Excellent shooting from Jervois goalers Janelle Cheso and Kirstie Gabell helped their team go ahead 18-6 at the first break.
In the second quarter Meningie’s Lyticia Weetra at goal attack worked well with defenders Bren Rowe and Michelle Crossman to move the ball down the court.
At half-time Jervois had increased their lead to 32-10.
Casey Modra came on in defence for Jervois in the third term, to giver her team a boost.
Going into the final quarter Jervois was ahead 51-13.
Meningie came out strong in the final quarter and tried hard to fight back, however Jervois’ court set up made it hard, and they eventually ran out winners, 65-20.

15 and under division one
Jervois won the toss and got the first hard-fought goal.
This set the precedent for the whole game, with both teams going goal for goal.
Both teams were equally matched as all players worked hard to give their team a boost.
However, it all came down to the final quarter when Jervois slowly pulled away to a four-goal advantage, which they maintained to get across the line, 39-35.

15 and under division two
In a fast, physical game Meningie hit the ground running with fast passing and tight defence of Brittany Hancook and Mel Vandenbrink.
This restricted Jervois’ shooting opportunities, making it hard for them to score.
There was strong defence from both teams in the second quarter.
Jervois’ Kaitlyn May and Meningie’s Chloe Padman battled it out for their respective teams and created drive down the court.
In the third quarter Jervois settled, showing a passion for the ball.
Strong hands and leading by Charly Heym in centre for Jervois freed up the team and set up play.
Jervois’ Hannah Kluske kept her team motivated with lots of voice, combining well with Johanna Chudy, who was shooting accurately.
Sara Rankine was inspirational in Meningie’s attack, encouraging her team with dynamic court coverage, shooting, combining well with Haley Shaw.
Meningie’s strong start to the game helped keep them in front of a persistent Jervois team. Final scores were Jervois 23, Meningie 35.

13 and under division two
At the start of the game Zoe Batchelor, in centre for Jervois, provided drive in the mid court.
Jervois defenders Jacinta Dougan and Caitlin Rhue were working well, making it hard for Meningie’s goalers Ellen Wilson and Daveena Wilson.
Meningie defenders Lauren Bag-shaw and Kaitlyn McKenzie Campbell applied pressure on the Jervois goalers, Bianca Kahl and Kayla Shultz, but proved to be too strong, shooting accurately.
Meningie’s Adele Pittendreigh, at wing attack, and Jervois’ Charlotte Miles, at wing defence, had a good tussle all game.
Meningie made changes at the last break to become more settled, however, Jervois were too far ahead and finished the game with a win, 69-4.

11 and under
In an evenly matched first quarter, scoring opportunities were kept to a minimum with excellent defence from Sarah Chudy of Jervois and Brianna Wilson of Meningie.
Jervois led 2-0 at the first break.
Meningie scored their first goal through Abby Hood, with Jess Hoad and Megan Shultz of Jervois both shooting well at the other end of the court.
Mid court players from both teams worked extremely hard with Meningie’s Maddison O’Connel and Jervois’ Claire Aunger having great games for their teams.
At half-time Jervois led by one goal.
Both teams came out hard in the third quarter with some excellent passages of play and more accurate shooting at both ends of the court.
At three-quarter time Jervois led 9-7.
In the last quarter Jervois’ mid court and defenders combined well to slowly pull away.
Meningie continued to try hard right until the final whistle and played an excellent team game but went down 9-16.

Both teams started off strongly, trying hard to get the ball into the goal circle.
Brittany Liebich, at goal defence for Jervois, made many leads and turnovers in defence.
However, Meningie goalers Alex McPherson and Shakira Marin were able to score six goals in the first half, while Jervois were unable to score.
Jervois’ Tia-Jae Conway-Jaensch chased hard and picked up lots of loose balls.
Olivia Hand also tried very hard to make lots of leads, but Meningie’s Regae Love, at wing defence, managed to create turnovers to lead Meningie to a victory of 12-0.
