Seven players in zone competition

4/07/2008 1:58:00 PM
SOME of the best players from the River Murray Football League will have their skills tested when they run out onto the ground to take part in the 2008 Country Football Championships in the Riverland this weekend.

The championships will feature players competing in six zone sides from around the State.

Seven players from the RMFL will represent the South East Zone against fierce competition, including last year’s champions Southern Districts.

Ramblers’ Liam O’Neil, Luke Button and Ryan Morris, Imperials’ Henry Hodge and Ryan Eyre and Mypolonga’s James Pedler have been called up to the side, with the Tigers’ George Pedler listed as an emergency.

James Pedler has also been given the honour of vice-captain.

Incentives to play well include awards such as player of the championship and the best under 21 player.

In addition, the best 24 players will be selected to represent South Australia at the Australian Country Carnival to be held at Shepparton at the end of the month.

Imperials’ Henry Hodge is looking forward to taking to the field on the weekend.

“I am happy that I have been selected, and I’m looking forward to the side getting some good results,” Hodge said.

Hodge said his aim was to help his side win the championships, with the opportunity of being selected in the State side a bonus.

“Every player will be doing their best to help their team win, but it is also a chance to test your skills against the best in the State,” he said.

South Australian National Football League affiliated leagues manager Justin Dent said that selection for the State side was a great incentive for players to compete.

“Along with the opportunity for the players to challenge themselves in our local championships a select few will be eligible to represent their State and test themselves on the national stage,” he said.
