THE Mannum Roos have won their last three games, two of those games with just about the last kick of the day and the other in a last quarter effort.
But they were all against teams lower down the ladder.
Jervois have only lost two games for the season, both against Ramblers.
In typical Jervois fashion they don’t talk about things, they go and do something about them.
Ben Woodhouse lined up for them last week in his first game of the season and when he gets some match fitness under his belt, he will give them another tall marking option either in attack or defence.
It has been alleged that Jervois are about to sign up a gun player before the June 30 deadline.
This player is allegedly a game breaker and a key position forward.
He is coming to Jervois because he loves the environment and his match fee consists of a cap and a t-shirt in the club colours.
Sam Mahony, the coach, is a man of many contacts and he doesn’t want to go down in the history books as the first coach in five years to lose a grand final.
Mannum won’t be easy at home, it’s a hard ground to play and it’s a hard ground to defend because of its size.
Todd Boughen played his best game ever for the Roos against Meningie but ‘Toddles’, it’s time to do it against a top-three team.
Ben Quinn is the engine room of this team.
He just keeps grinding on and he is very smart around the goal-front.
Shane Harte is having a good year, Jarrad Woodward, Josh Rosenzweig, Brad Wakefield and Matt Connolly are all contributing.
Mannum are slowly regaining players and running into some sort of form.
Andrew Warnest is the icing on the cake, he is the class they are missing at the minute.
Jervois are just going through the motions in June.
Jason Bayliss gives them a start in ruck, Brad Schmidt hit his straps last week and if he gets the ball Zac Ewer gets it, Mahony gets it and then it doesn’t matter because Trevor Rigney gets it.
If Trevor Rigney has a bad day he only gets six goals, so he has had a few bad days this season, but if he is on song he will hit double figures.
This Saturday it is going to be a privilege for someone from Mannum to stand this great player.
If I was one of the Mannum back six I would hope like hell it wasn’t me who had to stand him.
But if it had to be I would go up and shake his hand and not wash it for a week, hoping some of the magic rubbed off, as this player is a star.
Jervois 31 to 40 points.
Imperials v Tailem Bend
Imperials have lost two of their last three games and some of their players are struggling for form.
I guess it’s better to be struggling in June than September but it’s getting to the stage where questions are starting to be asked out loud about some of their recruits.
Josh Charles and Kane Tonkin are two that that the punters are asking about as it’s been weeks since they have been sighted.
Martin Baillie has been stalled on 34 goals for the entire month of June, but he bagged six goals last time against the Eagles.
Tailem Bend on paper is an easy target for Imperials.
Henry Hodge, Ryan Eyre and Jason Puiatti are young players in pretty good form. Luke Harrowfield, Mathew Kowald and the world’s slowest man Baillie form a three-pronged attack, which will split the Tailem Bend defence wide open.
Imperials look vulnerable in the ruck, with Nick Stephen still learning the ropes, but his direct opponent Patrick Gabb hasn’t been sighted for a month.
I reckon it gets a bit cold for him in June.
The Eagles lost by 159 points in round one but they should be able to restrict the fall-out to 100 points this time around.
Wayne Luckettt was the go-to man last start against Jervois, by bagging four out of their seven goals scored.
Big Darren Buckingham started off his A grade career like Buddy Franklin.
He had nine goals on the board after two games and still has nine goals on the board after three games.
The only time he troubled the scribes last week was when he was sent off.
Dylan Hogath, Brad Bell, Damien Raidis and Tony Lynch are the Eagles’ four best movers.
Not enough to trouble the Blue boys.
Imperials 91 to 100 points.
Ramblers v Meningie
The Roosters looked very second hand last week without their jetsetters.
Clint Girardi and Jarrod Sykes took off to Europe for a four-week mid season break, obviously flew business class and received the silver service befitting the Rambler Football Club.
Whatever happened to the tradition of having a couple of days’ break down at Freds Landing?
They are dropping like flies at Ramblers.
Joel Matchoss may not play again this season, Luke Button will need to pass a fitness test and they are probably fortunate they are lining up against the Meningie Bears this Saturday.
Anthony ‘Good Guy’ may ask the punter off the hill to address the players this week. It’s the same punter who caused a crucial turnover against the Mypolonga Tigers, the same punter who Mypolonga coach Damien Cross gave his best team man award to last week.
He was inspirational for the Tigers.
The Roosters showed last week how vulnerable they are when placed under pressure, but Meningie just don’t have the class or the depth to go four quarters with Ramblers.
The brick with eyes Daniel Zadow resumed after a long absence last week.
He hasn’t gained in pace during his lay-off and a push bike would be a welcome addition to his game, but he still reads the play better than most players in the competition.
Ryan Morris went off the boil last week but he rarely plays two poor games in a row.
Morris and Ben Dougall will stretch the Bears defence, throw in Adam Jackson who was beaten by a good player last week and it’s hard to see the Meningie Bears holding out for four quarters.
Ryan Viney, Greg Stevens, Mark Marchetti, Trent Paech and Liam and Patrick O’Neil will win enough of the football to give their forwards every chance to kick a substantial score.
The Meningie Bears gave a good account of themselves last week.
Mark Turner bagged a career-best six goals, Evan Smith is as honest as they come, Josh Robinson, Chris Lawson. Chris O’Hara and the young players Peter Reichelt and Andrew Cunneen bust their guts every week.
But when it gets down to the nitty gritty they get run over.
They are inexperienced and when you are an evolving team as Meningie are and things don’t go their way they can drop their heads very quickly.
We all want to see the Bears up and about but not at the expense of the Roosters.
I expect a contest for half a game then the cream will rise and the Roosters should win comfortably by 91 to 100 points.
