Minister’s office denies weir drilling rumours

12/05/2008 9:20:00 AM
SA Water has confirmed no drilling or soil testing has taken place for the temporary Wellington weir.

The SA Water response followed community discussion about engineers who were testing the soil at the weir site having drill down more than 150 metres before reaching any solid ground, thus placing the wall construction in doubt.

A spokeswoman for River Murray Minister Karlene Maywald said there was no truth in the claim and it was just a rumour. The State Government has planned for the 2.5 kilometre weir to be a sinking structure.

The Wellington weir was first proposed by Premier Mike Rann at a national water forum in November 2006.
