MURRAY Bridge Recy-cling is the latest in a recent string of Murray Bridge businesses to be hit with a damage bill after arsonists allegedly lit fires on the premises.
Firefighters attended the Thomas Street business at 1.30am on Saturday, taking 15 minutes to control the blaze, the cause of which is undetermined.
This was not the first late-night attack fon the town’s businesses.
On the night of March 4 a fire was deliberately lit at Wally’s Bottle Yard causing about $15,000 damage.
The Pet Shed on the corner of nearby Jose and Cornwall streets was set alight on the same night, causing more than $500 damage and making the animals in the building sick.
On April 28 another fire was deliberately lit, this time at Adelaide Road business Beds R Us, where a skip bin outside the business was set on fire causing about $2000 of smoke and heat damage to a nearby building.
Metropolitan Fire Service regional manager George Rodis said arsonists had previously targeted Murray Bridge Recycling.
More than $100,000 in damage was cause by a fire in December 2006 and four fires were deliberately lit on the premises in the two years prior.
Owner Warren Schulz told The Standard in 2006 that the fires were “pretty frustrating”.
“It’s just needless, it makes you wonder what the world is coming to,” Mr Schulz said.
Murray Bridge Sergeant Kevin Hall said police were aware of the number of fires being deliberately lit in Murray Bridge in recent weeks.
“Whilst we are investigating those fires there are no suspects at the moment,” Sergeant Hall said.
“I think they’re (recycling depots) a target in that there is a lot of paper and cardboard around.”
Police, the Country Fire Service and MFS attended the fire at Murray Bridge Recycling.
